A Call for Authors

Belmont Citizens Forum invites writers, researchers, photographers, and engaged neighbors from across Belmont to help shape the next generation of stories about our town. For more than two decades, our bimonthly newsletter has offered in‑depth, independent coverage of issues ranging from the Community Path and rail‑trail planning to Rock Meadow and Lone Tree Hill conservation, historic preservation, and the health of the Mystic Watershed. 

Now we are looking for new voices to explore what comes next.

Do you care about how Town Meeting decisions affect neighborhoods, climate resilience, transportation, or housing? Are you curious about the people who keep Belmont running—municipal staff, volunteers, veterans, educators, young activists, and long‑time residents with deep local knowledge? If you enjoy asking good questions, digging into public records, walking the sites you’re writing about, or simply explaining complex issues in clear language, there is a place for you on the Belmont Citizens Forum team.

We welcome contributors with a range of experience: from seasoned journalists, planners, and policy analysts to first‑time writers who want guidance on interviewing, fact‑checking, and shaping a narrative. Typical assignments include 800 to 1,500‑word feature articles, shorter news pieces, profiles, opinion essays, book reviews on environmental and civic topics, and photo essays that help readers see familiar places with fresh eyes.

Volunteer Profiler – Belmont Citizens Forum Newsletter

Do you enjoy talking with interesting people and bringing their stories to life on the page? The Belmont Citizens Forum Newsletter is seeking a volunteer profiler to write short features about notable and engaging Belmont residents. 

In this role, you will:

• Identify (in consultation with the Newsletter Committee) and interview Belmont neighbors who are making a difference in civic life, the environment, the arts, local businesses, and community service.  
• Craft crisp, readable profiles (typically 800–1,200 words) that fit the Newsletter’s informed, community-focused voice.  
• Work with the editor and Newsletter Committee on story selection, deadlines, and light editing support.

This is an excellent opportunity for an aspiring or experienced writer, journalist, or engaged resident who wants to deepen their connection to Belmont and help showcase the people who shape our town. Prior interviewing or writing experience is helpful but not required; curiosity, reliability, and comfort talking with interesting people are essential.
