This is a part-time position with a flexible work schedule that varies across a two-month production cycle.

About the newsletter: The Belmont Citizens Forum (BCF), a nonprofit located in Belmont, Massachusetts, has published a bimonthly (six issues per year) newsletter in print and online since 2000. The newsletter principally covers:

  • The environment, including management of Belmont conservation land, native flora and fauna, invasive plants, rivers and streams and stormwater management;
  • Development, including affordable housing, planning, zoning, and development in adjacent communities;
  • Transportation, including traffic, pedestrian infrastructure and the Belmont Community Path (a planned bicycle-pedestrian route that will connect Belmont to Waltham and Cambridge);
  • Local history, including people and places;
  • Energy, including progress towards Belmont’s declared green energy goals;
  • Candidates for major town offices (e.g., Select Board) are interviewed for the March issue;
  • Notable Belmont residents are profiled.

The newsletter is printed black and white and typically runs 20 to 28 pages. The newsletter PDF is posted on the BCF website in 4-color.  The BCF newsletter committee, a group of six Belmont residents, including two BCF board members, works with the editor to help generate article ideas, identify authors, write articles and edit articles. The newsletter follows Chicago Manual of Style rules.

Responsibilities:

  • Process articles for each issue of the newsletter, initially by making them available (together with any accompanying images) on Google Docs (or similar) for editing by the managing editor and members of the newsletter committee (about 3 weeks before publication).
  • Lay out the print version of the newsletter in consultation with the managing editor regarding article placement, and with the input of the newsletter committee for a final round of editing (mostly typos) about 8-10 days before publication. Follow current design specs using Adobe InDesign or similar.
  • Oversee the successful handoff of each issue to our printer and review printer’s proof.
  • Send out email using MailChimp notifying all e-subscribers of newsletter publication, plus occasional additional emails (4-8 per year) concerning important news or events (for example, to publicize the annual BCF cleanup event on Belmont conservation land).
  • Update and manage the BCF website, facilitating online access to newsletter articles (mostly around publication date), and optimizing traffic from external websites.
  • Attend bimonthly meetings with the editor and newsletter committee to discuss article ideas, identify possible authors and get feedback on recent issues of the newsletter (2-hour meetings, held in the evening).
  • Attend six BCF board meetings per year for 20-30 minutes (first agenda item) to report on status of current issue and discuss story ideas for future issues, utilization of website, and address any other newsletter issues.

Reporting:

  • The publication manager will report to the BCF board of directors.
  • The position requires strong collaboration with the editor, who is responsible, together with the BCF newsletter committee, for generating article ideas, recruiting authors and monitoring the progress of articles.
  • The position also requires collaboration with the BCF newsletter committee, including attendance at six meetings per year when the next issue is planned and any improvements to the newsletter or website are discussed.

Experience:

  • Required: experience with e-publishing software suitable for layout of print publications ( Adobe InDesign preferred, or Affinity Publisher, Canva, Microsoft Design, or similar), used in the context of a print publication.
  • Required: experience with email management software (e.g. Mailchimp).
  • Preferred but not required: knowledge of or interest in the topics covered by the newsletter.

Compensation:

  • $15,000–20,000 per year (paid bimonthly), depending on the candidate’s qualifications and the final scope of responsibilities
  • Additional tasks related to the website may be compensated on an ad hoc basis
